Hugh Wilson Knoll


So many faces from the Victorian and Edwardian eras remain anonymous mysteries, but a recent addition to my collection came with a name. On the back of a scalloped edge card someone wrote: Hugh Knoll. 

​Thanks to that simple inscription and the photographer's imprint on the front, I've been able to piece together the life of the young man behind the wire-rimmed glasses.

​Born in Ohio in 1874, Hugh Wilson Knoll grew up in a household in Washington Township, Stark County. He was the son of George Knoll and Sarah Knoll. Growing up alongside five siblings, Hugh spent his youth working on the family farm. 

​But the photo we have of him shows a sharp, styled young gentleman. 

​To understand this photograph, you have to look at the bottom of the card, where the studio name is proudly embossed: Courtney, McKinley Block, Canton, O.

​The McKinley Block was a premier location in downtown Canton, named in honor of the city's most famous resident, President William McKinley. For a young man living in the community of Homeworth or  Washington Township, a trip into downtown Canton was a major event.

​Local newspaper archives from the Alliance Daily Review give us windows into Hugh's life around this time. In May 1899, a social note mentions Hugh traveling into Canton from Homeworth for the day. It is incredibly easy to imagine a young Hugh stepping into Courtney’s studio during one of these trips to have his photo taken.

The timing of the portrait lines up with a major milestone of Hugh's life. In 1898, at the age of 24, Hugh married a local young woman named Ada Mary Altman.

​Because cabinet cards were frequently made to be exchanged with loved ones or gifted to family, it's likely that this portrait was taken right around the time of their wedding.

​Following their marriage, Hugh established his own mortgage free farm in Washington Township. He and Ada raised two children, Harold and Anna. Another brief newspaper snippet from April 1903 notes that Hugh was "nursing a sore hand" but together, they built a loving family and a successful farm. 

Hugh passed away on November 14, 1931 and was laid to rest in Alliance, Ohio. His beloved Ada lived a long life, passing away in 1970. She rests right beside him.

​Today, Hugh's portrait has been carefully cleaned and added to my collection. He is no longer just a ghost in a fading sepia photograph. He is Hugh Wilson Knoll, a successful Ohio farmer, a husband, and a father.

Florence Henlen

Born: 1884 in Dickenson County, KS Died: 1975 I recently acquired a beautiful late 1880s photograph that I just had to research immediately. The photo shows a toddler bundled up against the cold. She is wearing a dark winter coat trimmed with white fur or wool, matching cuffs, and a ruffled bonnet. She stands in a Victorian studio's version of the outdoors leaning against a prop tree stump. ​At the bottom, the photographer’s mark reads "Weaver" of Herrington, Kansas (a historic spelling of Herington). ​Turning the card over reveals a faint pencil inscription: (Florence C. Henlen) ​A look into historical records from Dickinson County, Kansas, brings Florence’s world into view. ​Born in 1884, Florence Campbell Henlen was roughly three to five years old when she stood for this photo.  Her family was prominent in the early days of Herington. The Bailey Brothers

Recently, I found an early 20th century cabinet card featuring two young children. A note on the back of the photo changed everything.  The photo shows two children dressed in dark Edwardian garments, polished lace-up boots, and perfectly styled white hair bows. Looking at the image, one might naturally assume they are looking at two young girls. ​Flip the card over, however, and a note  sets the record straight: ​ "Kenneth & Faber Bailey. There mother always dressed them like girls." ​While it was a common late Victorian and Edwardian custom to keep young boys in gowns or tunics, their mother, Sophia Bailey, clearly possessed a flair for fashion.
